Gareth Halliday

Counsellor / Psychotherapist

What is your role?

I am a Counsellor/Psychotherapist.

Who do you work with?

I’m happy to work with anyone aged eighteen and above.

What experience as a Therapist do you have?

I’ve been practising for over a year, with a wide variety of different clients, I have studied counselling and psychotherapy for three years as part of my qualification and worked as a volunteer in an addiction charity, where I also set up and run a creative writing group to support clients in their recovery. Before all that I also worked as a volunteer befriender at Befrienders Highland for several years.

What are your qualifications?

I hold an HND and HNC in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and certificates in counselling skills and working with addiction. I am accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Any unrelated qualifications?

Previously I graduated from Edinburgh University with an MA in Ancient History before working in business for many years, I currently work as an author alongside my therapy work.

What type of therapy do you provide?

I take an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from various modalities, with the basis being a person centred approach, respecting the uniqueness and individuality of every client’s experience. Combined with a strong therapeutic relationship, being the vehicle for overcoming difficulties and creating change. I’ve also studied and used psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural approaches.

What theories or approaches inform your work?

Alongside my formal training in counselling and psychotherapy I’m informed by my personal interest and study of Jungian psychotherapy and philosophy.

Why are you a therapist?

I’m thrilled to be offering therapy with Evolve! Going to therapy myself was daunting, so I know how hard it can be to make that initial contact, but it also turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life, so I know from experience that taking the jump and going to counselling can change our lives hugely for the better. After experiencing this for myself over a decade ago I knew I eventually wanted to work towards becoming a therapist myself, which led to my training and to now offering therapy. I believe that therapy can change our lives and be one of the best investments in ourselves that we can make.

What do clients come to therapy with you for?

I’ve worked with clients who came for a wide range of reasons, anxiety is a big one in our society, as well as depression, I’ve also worked a lot with addictions. Life can be challenging, we all have times where it feels like we need support to deal with difficulties. If you’re not sure, just get in touch and we can discuss.

How do clients arrange to work with you?

Filling in the form below is probably the best way to start the process. Then I can email back with all the information a client requires. I offer sessions Mondays to Wednesdays, in person at our Inverness Office and  online.

How many sessions can a client have?

I’m happy to work for short term or longer term therapy depending on the client’s needs and what they are bringing to therapy and what they hope to get out of our sessions together. This will always be driven by the client and we will review progress regularly to ensure the client is satisfied and getting what they need from therapy.
